Customers who lost their water supplies are to get £50 compensation, a water company has confirmed. Last Thursday, 36,000 customers in Scunthorpe and the surrounding area were left with no supply or low pressure. According to Anglian Water, the problem was caused by two pipes bursting, which prevented water flowing into a local storage reservoir.
Most of the water supply was restored by Friday. Emma Staples, the company's director of corporate affairs, apologised for the disruption caused, adding: "If they [customers] have been off for over 12 hours, then they will be credited to their bill with £50." Staples said: "I don't deny that it was incredibly hard and difficult to be without water during the last two days, but our absolute focus has been getting things back to normal. "We are incredibly sorry for the disruption and upset that has been caused." A number of schools and businesses were forced to close .
A collection point for bottled water was set up at Scunthorpe United's stadium, with some customers reporting they were queuing for up to two hours. An Anglian Water spokesperson said "it was a complicated and challenging issue to fix". "While supplies have been restored, we're continuing to carry out additional work on site to strengthen the resilience of the system and help protect supplies in the future," they added.
